ECU History Education Literacy Modules
In summer 2014, as part of the federally funded ECU Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) secondary teacher education reform grant, HIED faculty worked collaboratively with colleagues from several ECU teacher education program areas to generate a series of literacy modules that could be used by pre-service and in-service teachers alike. These modules were intended to supplement, with content specific examples, the experience that teacher education students were already receiving through READ courses during their teacher preparation experience. A major driving force behind these modules was the literacy-based instruction movement associated with Common Core State Standards and the NC Essential Standards. The modules linked through the website below are intended to enhance teacher candidates' capabilities to teach students of multiple ability levels history using a variety of genres. The modules are structured with an introduction, a discussion of challenges to teachers and students, a identification of varied strategies used to teach the genre, a "deep-dive" into one particular strategy, and a check for understanding with some case-based scenarios.
