Co-Teaching in HIED
As part of its teacher preparation program, HIED at ECU adopted co-teaching as part of its internship 1 and 2 program. ALL HIED interns and their CTs are considered to be in a co-planning and co-teaching relationship, where every intern teaches part of every lesson everyday. We made this move several years ago because we found that it provided a better way to prepare interns to be successful. As we say, it moved our program from preparation through punishment (throwing an intern into a situation and seeing if they would "sink" or "swim") to preparation through purposeful practice. Our CTs have also commented on how this model allows them to maintain their classroom expectations while also allowing the intern the opportunity to learn from the CT in the moment
This page is intended to provide some resources and expectations for both interns and CTs involved in co-teaching in HIED. The following introductory resources were created by ECU's nationally recognized faculty in co-planning and co-teaching, Drs. Charity Cayton, Maureen Grady, Ron Preston, Rose Sinicrope, and Christina Tschida. The programmatic resources help interns and CTs understand the application of co-teaching methodology in the HIED program.

Co-teaching in action in an HIED classroom - The video below shows an HIED CT and intern engaged in a seamless co-teaching relationship. We have tried to note where certain co-teaching practices are employed (as well as other model teaching practices). This demonstrates that co-teaching should be a fluid interchange of roles between CT and intern.
